One of the best things about the changing of the seasons is the new fashion trends that come with them. Spring and summer bring warm weather and sunshine, and a plethora of new handbag styles to try. From mini bags for days when you’re on the go to oversized bags when you want to make a statement, there’s something for everyone.
I’ve put together a list of the top 10 handbag trends of spring summer 2023 to get your shopping started. From bright and fun colors to simple and classic styles, there’s something for everyone. I’ll cover the classic styles that are always in fashion, as well as the new and exciting handbag trends of the season. So read on to learn more about the biggest handbag looks of the season.
Back To Work Bags
The first category is back to work bags, the trend that always stays popular among women. With work Totes in demand, this snake print from WHBM really stood out to me as a unique piece for what it is. For a computer bag, it adds a touch of glam to your workday attire.
Next is Mango. I really like their bags because they are very quick to respond to new trends, are affordable and look well made for the price. This is the shopper bag with a double handle, it’s a relaxed, flexible look and very roomy so you have space for everything you carry.
If you are after a leather tote option, know that they are not cheap. But I look at leather as a long lasting piece, hence it’s a staple in my closet. I recommend choosing the color wisely to match a big chunk of your wardrobe. This Kate Spade tote is a well structured and beautifully crafted option, on the lower price range of leather handbags.
It’s a considerable size with plenty of colors to choose from: light rose, white, camel and green. Lovely new releases.
XL Totes and Clutches
Oversized totes and clutches are a really big trend for SS 2023. However, the trend is not yet picked up by major retail stores, which means it’s still only available at the higher end brands.
I did find a couple for you ladies from Banana Republic. They make beautiful quality pieces and for the amount of material used, the higher price is not a surprise. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a tote bag this large. The clutch is also oversized, it’s a clear distinction between this season’s and any other style worn before.
The embossed style is slightly different, holds its shape and gives off a more elegant polished look.
Buckle Detail
Let’s focus on the buckles. This black shoulder bag has such cute details. I appreciate the uncommon thicker strap, the oversized buckles, and the heart mirror. My favorite is this pale pink shade for the spring summer season. It’s an affordable accessory for an instant mood boost.
Another Mango bag, this is the shopper bag with buckle. Simple, sleek, clean look, that is low maintenance and chic. I like this style a lot. You can easily wear it all year round.
For a more demure look, I just couldn’t take my eyes off this pretty cream style with the slight moon shaped silhouette. I think most of us wear bright colors and a soft cream shade handbag is a must have for SS 2023.
This next buckle one has to be the most wearable out of all. A deceivingly simple crossbody with an old school buckle, that blends in quietly with everything you have. The contrasting details and quality leather, upstyles your spring summer outfits.
Romance Details
The feminine and romantic details are prominent in the SS 2023’s new releases. Think flowers, pink, pretty little things, minis, rosettes, ruffles, and bows. This has to be my favorite category.
Here is a mini woven style with the added subtle pink handle and pompoms. The miniature size is what makes it so unique because these baskets are usually oversized. It’s a clear statement to carry it as an accessory instead of the usual practicality.
This fun beads style from Mango has to be so much fun to walk around. The colorful option comes in saturated orange and fuchsia shades. I would style this piece with a maxi dress for a casual relaxed SS look.
The gradient color combination is another handbag trend that is gaining popularity this spring summer season. Here is a pink and creme mix. The transition is made so beautifully, you can’t see where one color ends and the other begins.
The coral version is another option to match gold jewelry and a nice tan during the summer months.
Next is a slightly more feminine yet wearable design with a bow. I really like this cool tone color. Not only that it goes with everything but it’s different. It’s not white and not warm beige. More like a light mushroom. Lovely color and style.
Flower power. This gorgeous little pink flower bag is the perfect pick for spring summer style. Carry it on a night out, prom, wedding, or even a girly night out. You can wear this anywhere to spice up your SS look.
Pearl embellishments are also on handbag trends of 2023. This feminine take combines the woven pearls and several motifs in one. A romantic and current style with elegance for your SS style.
Flouncy Bags

Woven pieces are a staple in SS handbags trends, but this year it’s all about woven leather. And so far Madewell is leading. This Madewell medium size crossbody is super soft and slouchy, with just the right size small but with enough room. It has a convenient top handle as well and two color choices, the camel or cool pink. And here is the matching woven leather belt to go with it.
For small bag lovers, this weightless crossbody is perfect for carrying essentials without even noticing. And if you are not into leather there are vegan alternatives, like this pink one!
Sleek Bucket
This Mango bucket bag is a sleek interpretation with the city feel. I like the contrasting neutral colors that can last through seasons.

My list of handbag trends of spring summer 2023 is incomplete without the see through element. The net totes are a pretty visible and fashionable item to carry around. Plus, there are so many colors to choose from.
A slightly roomier option is this All Saints net tote with fringe. Unlike the previous design, this one has built in cotton lining and leather straps for more safekeeping and privacy.
And if you just want to try out this trend without spending a fortune, here is a plain and simple version from Roxy, no lining no fuss, just au naturel.
Oh and here’s one more thing, the cellphone bag. Looks just like the 90’s kodak case doesn’t it? Perfect size for our indispensable phone.
Y2K Nostalgia
The metal decorations, buckles, cargo pockets and denim noticed across this year’s fashion trends all evoke the Y2K nostalgia.
Ladies if you are dressing in denim this spring season, you probably need a denim purse too. Here is another Mango option, it has buckles, can be worn as a cross body, has shine and will match all your spring summer outfits.
I also want to add the plastic see-through handbag here. It’s different isn’t it? While we don’t usually display what’s inside our purses, maybe that’s the point, to remove inhibitions and not be afraid of transparency.
Moving on, if you think you know what a mini bag looks like, wait till you see the micro. These are adorable collectables, like stickers, one of each color. I have no idea what to fit in them, maybe that’s why you need a phone bag for the phone, and the micro bag for the lipstick? Don’t worry, overlapping bags are also very trendy right now.
Top Handle
This Ted Baker top handle is everything you need this spring and summer season. The handle looks unlike anything you and I probably own, and full of summer vibes.
Continuing with sunny accents, look at this natural fibers top handle bag. A great piece for when you are stuck at work or traveling and still want to enjoy the summer mood.
Next is this mini top handle with a chain design on the handle itself. I don’t think I’ve seen this before. It’s black and goes with everything for an evening out. Cute affordable design to try something new.
Sparkle
Speaking of night out, we can’t skip the glittering evening bags decked in shine, sequins, and metallics. In the SS 2023 sparkles we have metallic clutches such as this dune shade with pleats, also available in gold, for a more festive night.
I also want to tell you about some colorful options, because it is the season to wear bright happy colors. This cotton candy blue is the go to bag if you plan on visiting movie theaters this summer. It has beautifully crafted details such as the eagle head, it’s convertible from top handle to a crossbody, and a pretty girly take on the puffy clutches currently popularized.
If there is one purse I would carry this entire season, it would be this iridescent Ted Baker acrylic. Reminds me of pearls and looks like a work of art. Plus, it’s actually affordable too.
Lastly, Anthropologie doesn’t disappoint with this miniature design of what looks like a grown up bag. Superb color, if rose is not your thing, they also have white, beaded handle and a girly structured fit.
